Docs/Desktop app

Sign in on the desktop app

How the desktop app signs you in through your browser, how to switch accounts, and what to check if the handoff does not complete.

  5. If the handoff fails

The desktop app does not ask for your password. It hands sign-in to your browser, where you use whichever method you normally use.

Steps

  1. Open the desktop app and choose Sign in.
  2. Your browser opens a Keplar page to connect the app. Sign in there if you are not already.
  3. Confirm that you want to connect the desktop app.
  4. Return to the app. It is now signed in to the same account as the browser.

Why a browser handoff

Sign-in methods such as Google and Microsoft run best in a browser, and a browser keeps your password and email links out of the app. The handoff uses a short-lived code that is exchanged once.

Switching accounts

Use the account menu in the app to add or switch accounts, as in the browser. Signing out of the desktop app does not sign you out of the browser.

Same plan, same data

Because the app is a client for the cloud service, plans, credits, chats, Study sets and sites are the same as on the web.

If the handoff fails

See Desktop troubleshooting: the usual causes are a blocked pop-up or protocol handler, an expired code, or a browser profile that is signed in to a different account than you expected.

  • Install the desktop app: Download Keplar One for Windows, macOS or Linux, verify the checksum, and get past the first-run warning that appears because builds are not yet code-signed.
  • Desktop troubleshooting: Fixes for the common desktop problems: first-run warnings, a sign-in that does not return to the app, a blank window, and a download that will not verify.
  • Accounts and sign-in: Ways to sign in, what an account adds, using several accounts on one device, and what happens to chats when you are signed out.
